Levoxyl (Levothyroxine) for PCOS

Overview
Levoxyl is a prescription drug approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat hypothyroidism and pituitary thyroid stimulating hormone suppression. Levoxyl is also referred to by its drug name, Levothyroxine. In cases of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), Levoxyl may be prescribed to treat hormonal imbalances. Since Levoxyl is not FDA-approved to treat PCOS, this usage may be considered “off-label.”

Levoxyl is a synthetic thyroid hormone. Levoxyl is believed to work by supplementing the amount of hormones the thyroid naturally produces.

How do I take it?
Prescribing information states that Levoxyl is taken once a day.

Side effects
The FDA-approved label for Levoxyl lists common side effects including headache, fatigue, nervousness, moodiness, flushed skin, muscle tremors or weakness, fast or irregular heartbeat, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, irregular menstrual cycle, and impaired fertility.

Rare but serious side effects listed for Levoxyl include seizures, decreased bone mineral density, and hypersensitivity reactions.
