What Is Taking Metformin Like?

A myPCOSteam Member asked a question 💭

My doctor has refered me to the clinic again for scans, bloodwork etc. He mentioned Metformin might be helpful in managing my symptoms, but wants to wait until i've been to the clinic (10th november). I'm a bit scared - how do other people feel when/if they take it, if you don't mind me asking? I also take sertraline for depression, propanalol for migraines and asthma medication.

I take four 500 mg Metformin pills a day and it was a little rough at the beginning but now that my body has gotten used to it, I have more energy and feel better. If you need a high dose, ease into it. My doc started me on only one 500 mg dose a day for 2 weeks, then added a second for another 2 weeks and continued to add another dose until I got up to four 500 mg pills each day.

Word of warning - if you accidentally miss taking your Metformin one day and you're on a high dose like me, don't just assume you can take your full dose the next day. You will need to ease your way back up again. I made the mistake of taking all four of my pills the day after missing them and it took me weeks to get back to tolerating it without side effects again.

Ease into your dosage over a period of time, it can cause gastric issues

With PCOS our insulin doesn't work like it should our body produces to much and doesn't allow sugar to get to cells like it's supposed to causing our hormones to go crazy. I don't think we could technically be consider predisbetic but metformin acts to stop the overproduction of insulin allowing our bodies to act as they should.

I'm on metformin. I had some minor digestive issues when I was building up tolerance to it and I've seen others have much worse reaction to it. My best advice if they do put you on it is to make sure you have enough in your stomach when you take it and to try and eat healthy. Carbs tend to aggravate the symptoms. I got used to it and am happy to report it worked for me. I got my first natural period since January last month and by the look of my BBT chart I'm about to get my period. My BBT charts also indicate that I'm ovulating on my own which is exciting.
