I've always struggled with my weight but now I'm in my 30s and was recently diagnosed with diabetes type 2 which is common in my family genes and this time I really want to become healthier I'm more determined than I've ever been and I could use advice... So my question is what kind of exercises and diets do you ladies do or have done to lose weight and keep it off

Try myfitnesspal app. It uses your personal information (weight, height, etc.) to come up with a personal calorie and exercise goal for you. If you decide to try it out, look me up :)

I have KP, so i did the Healthy Balance class. not sure what your health insurance plan is, but I did lose 18 lbs just on keeping portions smaller, doing increments of 50 situps, etc.. strength training with a resistance band, and of course walking, what i do every day... (I have dogs, so that is a definite given!)

Oh dear! Health insurance is such a headache - sorry you're dealing with that!

Do some research for "Low GI foods" - the lower the GI number the less the food will impact your blood sugar levels. I try to stay away from simple sugars and simple carbs; so no sugar in my coffee, or heavily processed white flour products. etc. I'm not diabetic but I am insulin resistant so I try to be mindful of these things.

Skinnytaste.com is a really great resource for lower calorie recipes! She even provides full week meal plans and grocery shopping lists. You may need to do a little bit of tweaking to make it a bit more diabetic friendly but its definitely one of my favorite resources to use because she gives you everything you need in one place.

Hi MrsPitrucha! I agree with Shaineeec, diabetes complicates dieting. Have you talked with you doctor to see what they may recommend?

I do a moderate carb diet; so carbs make up about 30% or my daily intake of 1600 calories, which ends up being around 120g/day - sometimes more sometimes less. I still eat everything I used to - I just watch portion sizes and if I have pasta for one meal, I make sure the other meal is more veggie centric. It's all about balance for me. I have not given anything up entirely. The website/app myfitnesspal makes all of this tracking easy for me and has helped me lose weight slowly but surely. I have not added much for exercise - weight loss is about 80% nutrition and 20% exercise so I plan to add that in once I feel a little more comfortable in my own skin - for now I walk the dog and try to just move more!

I honestly wouldn’t suggest a Keto diet if you HAVE diabetes (no offense Coryn). You’ll have an increased chance of throwing yourself into DKA/ kidney damage. Diabetes definitely complicates dieting... on top of everything else. Unfortunately, I don’t have a good diet for you but I’ll keep my ear out!
